Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global public health concern caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and represents a significant threat to healthcare worldwide. It was first identified in a cluster of patients with pneumonia symptoms in Wuhan city, China, in late 2019. Initially, it was referred to as 2019 nCoV but was later renamed as COVID-19 by the World Health Organization. It is considered to be similar to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) viruses.
