(Elsevier) Researchers report the development of a sensitive and specific assay to detect different serotypes of Salmonella, paving the way for rapid serotyping directly from specimens. This improvement upon current testing methods can play a critical role in quickly tracing the origin of the infection. The report appears in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, published by Elsevier.

In this study, 8 Salmonella phages and 10 E. coli O157:H7 phages were isolated from chicken products. A polyvalent phage PS5 capable of infecting S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, and E. coli O157:H7 was further characterized and its efficacy in reducing these foodborne pathogens was evaluated in in vitro and in foods. Morphology, one-step growth, and stability assay showed that phage PS5 was a myovirus, with relatively short latent periods, large burst sizes, and high stability. Genome sequencing analysis revealed that the genome of PS5 does not contain any genes associated to antibiotic resistance, toxins, lysogeny, and vi...

Abstract In Japan, from 2000 to 2018, for Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Salmonella food poisonings, the annual number of the outbreaks and that of the patients decreased exponentially though the size of the individual outbreaks (the number of patients per outbreak) tended to become larger. For food poisonings caused by Campylobacter, the annual number of the outbreaks increased exponentially while the outbreak size became smaller and the annual number of the patients remained almost unchanged. For food poisoning caused by norovirus, both the number of the outbreaks and that of the patients remained high throughout. ...

Last Thursday, CDC finally revised itswarning to the public about the vaping-associated respiratory disease outbreak to state clearly that vaping THC-containing products is playing a major role in the outbreak. It stated that:" The latest national and state findings suggest products containing THC, particularly those obtained off the street or from other informal sources (e.g. friends, family members, illicit dealers), are linked to most of the cases and play a major role in the outbreak. Therefore, CDC recommends that you should not use e-cigarette, or vaping, products that contain THC."In addition, CDC finallyr...
