This study aimed to validate the hypothesis that the ratio of cerebral blood flow (CBF) at rest in the lenticular nucleus (LN) territory to that in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory is higher in symptomatic Moyamoya disease (MMD) patients than in asymptomatic MMD patients. This was a retrospective observational study of adult patients with documented MMD who underwent single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and had been examined at the Department of Neurosurgery of Keio University Hospital during a 10-year period (2006 –2016). The diagnosis was made on the basis of typical imaging findings. We cla...

Conclusions: Echocardiography may be useful for the management of selected COVID-19 patients, especially those with elevated D-Dimer and Troponin levels, in up to 16% of patients. PMID: 32963823 [PubMed]

This study was conducted to determine the morphometric features and to make the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the images obtained by computed tomography (CT) of the main long bones (femur, tibia, fibula) in Van cats, and to reveal the biometric differences between these measurement values of both sexual dimorphism and homotypic variations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total sixteen adult Van Cats, 8 male and 8 female, were used in the study. The pelvic limb long bones of the cats, which were anesthetized with the ketamine-xylazine combination, were scanned with a CT device and their images were obtained. These i...

CONCLUSIONS: Accessory palatine foramina and their bony canals are frequently seen in CBCT with wide anatomical variations. New unusual connecting canals are found passing from palatine foramina to the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus through the sinus floor. These findings should be considered when planning for anesthesia and surgery in the palate. PMID: 32964408 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Lin N, Li J, Ke Q, Wang L, Cao Y, Liu J Abstract Aim: To evaluate the prognostic significance of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) for clinical outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Material and Methods. Eligible studies were searched by PubMed, MedLine, the Cochrane Library, from January 1, 2000, to June 30, 2019, investigating the prognostic value of CAR in patients with HCC. Primary endpoint was OS. Hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to determine the effect size. Results: 7 records including 2208 patients published since 2014 were enrolled into our me...

Authors: Bertoli F, Veritti D, Danese C, Samassa F, Sarao V, Rassu N, Gambato T, Lanzetta P Abstract The novel pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has challenged the medical community. While diagnostic and therapeutic efforts have been focused on respiratory complications of the disease, several ocular implications have also emerged. SARS-CoV-2 RNA has been found in tears of the infected patients, and reports suggest that the ocular surface could serve as a portal of entry and a reservoir for viral transmission. Clinically, COVID-...

Abstract Recent retrospective studies of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) revealed that the patients with common comorbidities of cancers and chronic diseases face significantly poorer clinical outcomes than those without. Since the expression profile of ACE2, a crucial cell entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2, could indicate the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, here we systematically dissected ACE2 expression using large-scale multi-omics data from 30 organs/tissues, 33 cancer types and some common chronic diseases involving>28 000 samples. It was found that...
