Freedom from atrial fibrillation after catheter ablation: Survival of the fittest

Catheter ablation reduces symptom burden and improves quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).1 However, long-term outcomes after ablation remain suboptimal, particularly in patients with persistent AF.2 Because risk factors for AF such as diabetes mellitus and obesity are often uncontrolled at the time of referral, electrophysiologists have become increasingly interested in the impact of risk factor assessment and modification before ablation. This interest has been emboldened by impressive reduction in AF recurrence after structured lifestyle modifications, exercise, and weight loss surgery in several studies.
