Handoff Communication to Optimize Patient Safety and Flow from Pre-op to the OR
Prior to implementation there was inconsistent handoff communication between the two units due to the lack of a standardized process. The Pre-op RN utilized a checklist prior to surgery that was left on the chart for the OR nurse and anesthesiologist to review. There was a disconnect and lack of accountability between the Pre-op RN and OR team because there was not a verbal handoff.
