Cost-Effectiveness of Parenteral Nutrition Containing Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Hospitalized Adult Patients from five European Countries and the US.

CONCLUSION: This cost-effectiveness analysis in six countries demonstrates that the superior clinical efficacy of ω-3 FA-containing PN translates into significant decreases in mean treatment cost, rendering it an attractive cost-saving alternative to standard PN across different health care systems. Clinical relevancy statement A recent meta-analysis showed that omega-3 fatty acid-containing parenteral nutrition is associated with statistically and clinically significant reductions in the rates of infection and sepsis as well as in the duration of hospitalization and ICU length of stay. This cost-effectiveness analysis for six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and US) demonstrates that these outcomes translate into significant decreases in mean hospital costs with omega-3 fatty acid-containing parenteral nutrition in comparison to parenteral nutrition not containing omega-3 fatty acids.
