Toll-like receptor gene polymorphisms in patients with keratitis

Several complications associated with microbial contamination of contact lenses occur during contact lens wear. Microbial keratitis is a potentially sight threatening disease that can occur with or without contact lens wear. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common causative agent seen in contact lens associated microbial keratitis (CL-MK) [1 –3] whereas staphylococci are common organisms for non-CL-MK cases [4,5]. Contact lens-induced peripheral ulcer (CLPU) is an inflammatory condition of the cornea [6] and Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumonia have been isolated from contact lenses at the time of the event [7–9].
