Clinical characteristics and time trends of hospitalized methadone exposures in the United States based on the Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) case registry: 2010-2017.

CONCLUSION: ToxIC Registry data showed that inpatient methadone exposures enhanced from 2010 to 2013, after which a reduction occurred in the years 2014 to 2017. PMID: 32698849 [PubMed - in process]

OBJECTIVES: Suicidal and accidental poisoning due to drug overdose is one of the common reason of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Considering such statement, toxicological analysis becomes imperative in suicidal, accidental and also in homicida...

Authors: Shklovsky-Kordi A, Gelernter R, Berkovitch M, Dagan Z, Kozer E Abstract BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen is the most common drug involved in pediatric poisonings, both intentionally and accidentally, and is the leading cause of acute liver failure among all age groups. OBJECTIVES: To define the characteristics of patients admitted to a pediatric emergency department (ED) where serum acetaminophen concentrations were measured, and to determine which variables are associated with significant risk of acetaminophen toxicity. METHODS: Acetaminophen serum concentrations were measured, in a retrospective case se...

In 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) controversially issued a black box warning that antidepressants were associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours in people aged under 18 years. In 2007, the warning was expanded to include young adults aged under 25 years. In 2005, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration responded to the FDA warning by requiring Product and Consumer Information leaflets to be updated to reflect the risk. However, there was considerable debate, and at times emotive backlash, in academic journals and the international media. Prominent US and Australian menta...

IMPORTANCE: Prior lethality analyses of suicide means have historically treated drug poisoning other than alcohol poisoning as a lumped category. Assessing risk by drug class permits better assessment of prevention opportunities. OBJECTIVE: To inve...

Abstract In 2011, Florida established a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program and adopted new regulations for independent pain-management clinics. This paper examines the association of those reforms with drug overdose deaths and other injury fatalities. Florida's post-reform monthly mortality rates - for drug-involved deaths, motor vehicle crashes, and suicides by means other than poisoning - were compared to a counterfactual estimate of what those rates would have been absent reform. The counterfactual was estimated using a Bayesian structural time-series model based on mortality trends in similar states. By Dece...

Self-poisoning accounts for a significant number of attendances to acute services. It can occur at any age. The reasons that lead someone to self-poison are variable and individual. It is often a manifestation of distress. Women are more likely to present, or die, after overdose than men, although men are more likely to die by suicide overall. Self-harm, including self-poisoning, is a strong risk factor and antecedent to suicide. Psychosocial assessment offers an important opportunity to intervene.

Alcohol poisoning is a serious medical emergency due to the overconsumption of alcohol that can result in death. Overconsumption of alcohol affects many systems in the body. The liver, which works to eliminate toxins from the body, is not able to keep up with the high amount being ingested. In turn, the central nervous system becomes so depressed to the point that it cannot perform its normal, essential functions such as beating the heart and breathing. There are many factors that can determine whether or not an individual could suffer from alcohol poisoning, such as: Rate of alcohol consumption Tolerance and dependency ...
