Single-fraction image-guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy for head and neck cancer: three cases of palliative brachytherapy.

Conclusions: Our palliative treatment technique appears to be safe, effective, and less invasive, and could be a treatment option for symptomatic patients with head and neck cancer. PMID: 32695200 [PubMed]

AbstractCemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is the most common benign fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws and generally considered non-neoplastic and self-limited. Here, we present a 30-year old female who noticed a bilateral swelling of her posterior mandible with irregular periapical mineralization and incomplete root resorption on panoramic radiographs. A biopsy revealed florid COD and no further treatment was initiated. 9 years later, she presented with a progressive expansion of her left posterior mandible after being treated for bilateral breast cancer 4 and 8 years before. CT scans showed expansile and densely mineralized ...

This study aims to report our experience about head and neck (HN) osteosarcoma focusing the attention on reconstructive and dental-rehabilitative problems. It is a retrospective study all patients were surgically treated in our department. Subjects with histological diagnosis of HN osteosarcoma, treated between 2005 and 2017 were included. The demographic characteristics, surgical treatment, eventually secondary reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation, performed in the same department, have been collected. The QOL was assessed through the EORTC QLQ-H&N35 (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Can...

Conclusions: Since its introduction, PERCIST 1.0 has been increasingly used in many clinical trials and prospective studies, with variable reporting of metabolic response and survival data. In general, it appears PERCIST response is associated with longer PFS and survival though the heterogeneity of disease, scan timing and therapies make data pooling difficult. Prospective inclusion of the PERCIST 1.0 criteria in clinical trials using FDG, with baseline, early monitoring, and end of therapy scans could inform cancer clinical trials. This study investigated the prevalence and the distribution of FGFR aberrations in Chinese cancer patients.MethodsWe screened genomic profiling results of plasma or tissue samples from 10,582 patients spanning 16 cancer types: lung, breast, gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, soft tissue sarcoma, esophageal, ovarian, colorectal, head and neck, renal, endometrial, osteogenic sarcoma, cervical, melanoma and lymphoma.ResultsOf the 10,582 patients screened, we observed 745 patients with FGFR aberrations, revealing an overall prevalence of 7.03%. Approximately, 3.78% harbored FGFR amplification, 2.73% had other mutations and 0....

SummaryOsteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor and mainly affects children and adolescents. The OS five-year survival rate remains very low. Thus, novel therapeutic protocols for the treatment of OS are needed. Several approaches targeting deregulated signaling pathways have been proposed. The antitumoral effects of polyphenols, which are naturally occurring compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, have been investigated in different tumors. Gossypol, which is a natural polyphenolic aldehyde isolated from the seeds of the cotton plant, has been shown to exert antitumoral a...

To the Editor I read the article by Perry et al with interest. Several other molecular mechanisms and factors may also play a role in how anesthesia may influence cancer outcomes. First, it is important to distinguish the difference between certain fluoridated anesthesia, such as sevoflurane, from their contribution to higher plasma fluoride levels. For example, it is known that sevoflurane can provide 20-fold the total daily dietary fluoride intake from all sources of fluoridated food and water combined, resulting in peak ionic fluoride levels in the range of 50 μmol/L. Hence, fluoridated anesthesia can result in extre...

Conclusion MTDH is pro-oncogenic factor playing multifaceted and diverse roles in cancer progression. Its association and central role in regulating signaling pathways such a MAPK, wnt/β-catenin, PI3K/AkT, NF-κβ pathways in various cancers shows that it plays a vital role in metastasis. MTDH contribution to chemo and radiotherapy resistance provides a new direction for the development of anticancer therapeutics. Multiple mechanisms converge to promote expression of MTDH in cancers. Further studies are therefore warranted to determine whether the elevated MTDH expression has prognostic value for development...

Conclusion: Fat fraction on MRI corresponded to fat content on histology and therefore contributes to lesion characterization. Measurement repeatability was excellent for ADC; this parameter increased significantly post-radiotherapy even in disease categorized as stable by size criteria, and corresponded to cellularity on histology. ADC can be utilized for characterizing and assessing response in heterogeneous retroperitoneal sarcomas. Introduction Soft-tissue sarcomas are often highly heterogeneous tumors with variable components that can include cellular tumor, fat, necrosis, and cystic change. In many soft-tissue ...

AbstractPrimary osteosarcoma of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus present as a challenge in head neck cancer. A 17  year female presented with left sided hemifacial pain, headache with nasal discharge. Clinico-radiological finding showed mass in sphenoethmoid recess spreading to adjacent structures. Endoscopic resection was done. Histopathological diagnosis was osteosarcoma of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus. Adjuva nt chemotherapy administered. Osteosarcomas of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus are aggressive tumors with variable clinical features warranting high clinical suspicion.
