Erectile dysfunction drugs can help cells destroy misfolded proteins

(Harvard Medical School) PDE5 inhibitors -- which include the erectile dysfunction drugs sildenafil and tadalafil -- can activate the cell's protein quality-control systems and improve its ability to dispose of misfolded proteins. Researchers observed lower accumulation of mutant proteins and reduced cell death and anatomical defects in zebrafish models of neurodegeneration after treatment.

AbstractPurposeAnalysis of quality of life changes after radiotherapy with focus on the impact of time after treatment and prescription dose.MethodsConsecutive patients were treated with doses from 70.2/1.8  Gy (n = 206) to 72/1.8–2.0 Gy (n = 176) in a single centre and surveyed using the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite questionnaire.ResultsUrinary and bowel bother scores decreased 1 / 3 / 6 points and 7 / 7 / 9 points on average 1 / 5 / 10  years after RT in comparison to baseline scores. The rate of urinary (need of pads in 8% vs. 15% before vs. 10 years...

This study was performed to explore the effects of metabolic memory on diabetic erectile dysfunction (ED), especially the severity and response to treatment.MethodsThrough medical records and follow ‐up by telephone, 67 patients meeting the criteria with a clinical diagnosis of ED and a diabetic history of more than 5 years were enrolled for erectile function analysis. They were divided into a glycemic control group, a glycemic non‐control group and a metabolic memory group according to gly cemic levels and treatments for diabetes in the past 5 years, and they were treated with phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor...

Many interventions to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) associated lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are associated with sexual side effects or complications, such as hematospermia, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculatory dysfunction. As loss of sexual function can significantly impact quality of life, an optimal treatment for BPH associated LUTS would be one without any sexual dysfunction side effects. Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive treatment for men with BPH associated LUTS.

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of exosomes derived from corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells (CCSMC-EXOs) on erectile function in a rat model of diabetes and compared their effect with that of exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-EXOs). We incubated labelled CCSMC-EXOs and MSC-EXOs with CCSMCs and then observed uptake of the exosomes at different time points using laser confocal microscopy. CCSMC-EXOs were more easily taken up by CCSMCs. The peak concentration and retention time of labelled CCSMC-EXOs and MSC-EXOs in the corpus cavernosum of DMED rats after intracavernous injection were...
