The time course of pain after tonsillectomy.

The time course of pain after tonsillectomy. Paediatr Anaesth. 2020 Jul 15;: Authors: Tan L, Carachi P, Anderson BJ Abstract Postoperative tonsillectomy pain is problematic with 75% of children reportingsevere pain on swallowing in the first 3 days of surgery.1 This pain decreases over time and while 86% of children 2-12 years might report noteworthy pain on day one at home, 67% of children were rated by parents as experiencing significant overall pain on day 3.2 However, 41% of those children were given only one or no analgesic on day 3.2 Although similar pain resolution profiles, with mirrored analgesic intake, have been reported during the first week after surgery, these patterns are not consistent.3 Some have reported increases in pain on day 2-3.4 Althoughinadequately treated postoperative pain is multifactorial, the combination of acetaminophen and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug alone appears inadequate for 30% of children for the first few postoperative days.
