An analysis of surgical literature trends over four decades

The impact of surgical research is far reaching, necessitating the importance of ongoing changes in this large and heterogeneous community. Given the intensity and duration of surgical training, surgical investigators may be at a disadvantage given the difficulties of procuring non-clinical time, which may be reflected by the paucity of pinnacle studies (randomized controlled-trials) within the surgical literature.1,2 Surgeons dedicated to advancing the field through research sometimes rely on weaker, albeit more pragmatic, study designs.
