Cartilage calcification and osteoarthritis: a pathological association?

Osteoarthritis (OA) remains one of the leading causes of disability worldwide.(1) Despite advances in our understanding of OA pathogenesis, no disease-modifying therapies currently exist. Whilst the association between cartilage calcification (CC) and OA is well recognised, there is ongoing debate as to whether CC plays a pathological role or if it is merely an ‘epiphenomenon’ of the OA disease process.
