Editorial for “Bariatric Surgery Before, During, and After Liver Transplantation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”

The authors present a well written systematic review of bariatric surgery as it is utilized in the liver transplant population prior to, during, and after liver transplantation. While there have been review papers written on this subject recently1, this is the first to perform a meta-analysis of the existing literature, which has the added benefit of providing some statistical significance to the findings already reported in the literature. Even though the literature is sparse and filled with case reports and a few series, it is important to collate the data in such a way that the readers can begin to understand if and when bariatric surgery should be utilized in patients with severe liver disease.
