Impact of adherence to Mediterranean diet and/or drug treatment on glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: DM2-CUMCYL study

Diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent disease, associated with chronic microvascular and macrovascular complications, including blindness and cardiovascular disease. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common form, representing approximately 90% of all diagnosed cases [1]. In Spain, the Di@bet.es Study estimated the overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus, adjusted for age and gender, at about 13.8%, nearly half of which was unknown diabetes [2]. In Castilla y Le ón—the largest administrative division in both the country and the European Union as a whole—the results of the RECCyL study show that the prevalence of diabetes has risen by more than 5.7 percentage points in a decade, from 9.89% in 2004 to 15.62% in 2014, with this increase concentrated in me n [3].
