Covid-19: A systemic disease treated with a wide-ranging approach: A case report. J Popul Ther Clin Pharmacol. 2020 Jul 03;27(S Pt 1):e26-e30 Authors: Massabeti R, Cipriani MS, Valenti I Abstract At the end of December 2019, the Health Commission of the city of Wuhan, China, alerted the World Health Organization (WHO) to a pneumonia cluster in the city. The cause was identified as being a new virus, later named SARS-CoV-2. We can distinguish three clinical phases of the disease with a distinct pathogenesis, manifestations and prognosis. Here, we describe the case of a 45-year-old male, successfully treated for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The patient was feeling sick in early April 2020; he had a fever and pharyngodynia. When he came to our COVID hospital, his breathing was normal. The nasopharyngeal swab specimen turned out positive. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed mild interstitial pneumonia. The patient was admitted to our department and treated with hydroxychloroquine, ritonavir, darunavir, azithromycin and enoxaparin. On day seven of the disease, the patient's respiratory condition got worse as he was developing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He was given tocilizumab and corticosteroids and was immediately treated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV). Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a large number of related deaths and multiple healthcare associated outbreaks [1,2,3,4]. Investigators have summarized the clinical characteristics of patients with initial onset [3,4], in which, some had atypical clinical manifestations, e.g., severe patients merely had moderate or low fever or even no fever [5], while some mild patients may not have pneumonia and only had low fever or mild fatigue [5,6]. An 85-year-old woman with history of melanoma is referred for a follow-up 18F-FDG PET/CT. 18F-FDG PET/CT scan showed bilateral and peripheral ground-glass opacities in upper and lower pulmonary lobes surrounded by consolidations of crescent shape with increased FDG uptake, findings compatible with organizing pneumonia. Conclusion: COVID-19 infection in pregnancy leads to increased risk in pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, PPROM, and may possibly lead to maternal death in rare cases. There is no evidence to support vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection to the unborn child. Due to a paucity of inconsistent data regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the newborn, caution should be undertaken to further investigate and monitor possible infection in the neonates born to COVID-19-infected mothers.Gynecol Obstet Invest
