Cerebral Microbleeds and Early Recurrent Stroke After Transient Ischemic Attack Results from the Korean Transient Ischemic Attack Expression Registry

Conclusions and RelevanceImmediate and optimal management seems to modify the risk of recurrent stroke after TIA. Cerebral microbleeds may be novel predictors of stroke recurrence, which needs further validation.

Authors: Cheng Y, Qiao L, Jiang Z, Dong X, Feng H, Gui Q, Lu Y, Liang Y Abstract The dose-dependent pleiotropic effects of statin therapy may have unwanted side effects such as increasing the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The relationships among statin therapy, LDL-cholesterol levels, and ICH risk remain controversial. Here, we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of dose-dependent statin therapy and ICH risk. Eligible articles were identified by searching MEDLINE from inception up to December 1, 2018. Reference lists of previous meta-analyses were manually searched to retrieve all relevant publi...

The development of durable left ventricular assist systems (LVAS) has been critical in providing an option for management of end-stage heart disease and addressing the increasing gap between demand and supply of donor cardiac allografts for management of end-stage heart disease. The technology also provides an alternative to heart transplantation in many patients. Unfortunately, the long-term use of LVAS has been associated with significant morbidities, the most devastating of which may relate to the thrombogenicity of the artificial devices, leading to ischemic stroke or pump thrombosis.

Background: From 2017, the Stroke Health Manager Training Project was carried out by the Chinese Government to strengthen health management and follow-up intervention after ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate whether after the intervention of the stroke health manager, the control of blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), glucose level, and the use of secondary prevention medications improved 3 months after discharge from our center following ischemic stroke. Methods: The study used a history-controlled approach. Patients who received stroke health manager intervention from May 1,...

Abstract There are no specific therapies for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and clinical data evaluating the effects of non-specific therapies on ADPKD patients are scarce. We therefore evaluated those effects using data from a longitudinal health insurance database collected from 2000-2010. We individually selected patients with and without ADPKD from inpatient data files as well as from the catastrophic illness registry in Taiwan based on 1:5 frequency matching for sex, age, and index year. The hazard ratios (HR) of all-cause mortality, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and end-stage ren...

In this study, we aimed at investigating the association between statin pretreatment and poststroke myocardial injury. Methods: Six hundred seventy-one patients diagnosed as acute ischemic stroke were enrolled. According to the histories of statin pretreatment before stroke, patients were categorized into nonstatin (n  = 474) and statin groups (n = 197), with the latter further divided into low-dosage, standard-dosage, and high-dosage subgroups according the dosages of statins.

Introduction: Elevated serum apolipoprotein B and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio have been associated with ischemic stroke and intracranial atherosclerotic disease. We sought to assess the relationship between serum levels of apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A1, and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio with ischemic stroke subtypes and large artery atherosclerosis location. Materials and Methods: We evaluated serum apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein A1 levels in consecutive, statin-na ïve, adult ischemic stroke patients admitted to an academic medical center in southern India.

Background Homocysteine (Hcy) is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Objective To explore the long-term prognostic value of Hcy in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) in the era of statins. Methods A total of 876 consecutive patients with stable CAD were recruited and followed up for a median of 6.1 years. Lipids and Hcy levels were measured at baseline. Primary endpoints were cardiac death and secondary endpoints were hospitalizations for acute coronary syndrome, myocardial revascularization, arrhythmic event or ischemic stroke. Results Follow-up data were obtained from 84...

ConclusionThis prospective study suggests that RAAS inhibitor therapy provides mid-term beneficial effects on outcomes in MINOCA patients; in contrast, dual antiplatelet, β-blocker and statin therapy had no effects on mortality and MACE. These results should be considered preliminary and warrant confirmation from larger studies.
