Leptomeningeal Disease in Breast Cancer, Bristol Experience
Purpose: Diagnosis of leptomeningeal disease (LMD) in breast cancer patients is associated with poor prognosis [1]; median overall survival is usually less than 12 months. Diagnosis of LMD can be elusive and requires a high level of clinical suspicion. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology is considered the gold standard to diagnose LMD but lack of malignant cells in CSF even in symptomatic patients can be a diagnostic dilemma [2]. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head can help diagnose LMD.
