Issue Highlights

Several recent studies in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology have examined the effectiveness of alternative strategies in the management of difficult to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease.1,2 Anti-reflux surgery is also an effective therapy to control proton pump inhibitors (PPI)-refractory symptoms of regurgitation, which occurs in roughly 13% of gastroesophageal reflux disease patients. Magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) is an alternative to standard fundoplication that uses magnetic attraction from inside a series of titanium beads which are placed laparoscopically in a bracelet-like fashion around the lower esophageal sphincter, hence re-establishing the body ’s natural barrier to reflux.
