Inhaled Anesthetic Agents

General anesthesia refers to a drug-induced loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable, even by painful stimuli and often have impaired ventilatory function.1 Inhaled anesthetic gases can be administered to impart general anesthesia and are often administered adjunctively with intravenous sedatives (eg, propofol, fentanyl, midazolam) to maintain appropriate depths of anesthesia throughout the surgical case.2 Inhaled anesthetic agents include isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane, and nitrous oxide (N2O).
