Pleiotropic Actions of Vitamin D in Composite Musculoskeletal Trauma

Composite tissue injuries (CTI) are complex and devastating wounds usually caused by high energy impacts such as motor vehicle accidents or within the military context, blasts. CTI's are characterized by severe trauma and wide-spread damage or ablation of several tissue types, most commonly: muscle, bone, vasculature, nerve and dermal tissues.[1] These types of injuries are extensive and often time's treatments are confounded by persistent complications as a result of poor wound healing, costing the health care system and the Department of Defense healthcare system billions of dollars.
