Commentary to “Renal ultrasound to evaluate for blunt renal trauma in children: A retrospective comparison to contrast enhanced CT imagingˮ

The use of a triple-phase CT imaging for the evaluation of blunt abdominal trauma has significantly decreased over the most recent decade [1]. Indeed, newer approaches to the traumatically injured patient with the use of FAST (focal abdominal sonogram for trauma), the use of serial physical evaluations of the patients while in the emergency room and when indicated the use of a split-dose contrast-enhanced single imaging CT scan, is currently the standard of care at most institutions [2]. This methodologic sequence significantly reduces the exposure of the patient to excessive radiation dosage, and has the added benefit of ruling out concurrent intraabdominal injuries.
