Abstract
The UK media are increasingly highlighting concerns about the standard of midwifery and obstetric care in the National Health Service (NHS). A 2015 report into the standard of care provided by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/408480/47487_MBI_Accessible_v0.1.pdf) commented that "Clinical competence was substandard, with deficient skills and knowledge" and "there were failures of risk assessment and care planning that resulted in inappropriate and unsafe care".
