Global Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

On September 5, 2002, the CEO of Merck, global health officials, and government officials from East Africa, gathered at Bombani village in the Tanga Region of Tanzania to mark 250 million doses of Mectizan having been given in Africa. This drug, manufactured and donated free by Merck, was used to combat Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, to prevent the loss of vision that had marked the lives of millions of Africans over generations. Globalization has often been condemned for its many shortcomings, but I was watching a miracle of globalization.
