Mindfulness and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in Adolescents

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe aim of this review is to discuss benefits of mindfulness for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescents.Recent FindingsADHD is a developmental disorder that persists into adulthood for most of the cases. ADHD, an often lifelong condition, is characterized by prevalent impairment in numerous domains such as mental health, occupational, academic, and many more. Pharmacological treatment option (e.g., stimulant) is a core of treatment for ADHD. However, even after receiving proper pharmacological medications, numerous patients continue to experience impairment or inadequate symptom reduction. Moreover, many patients also desire to reduce consumption of medicines and pursue alternative approaches. Among available non-pharmacological treatment options, mindfulness meditation training has established mounting clinical interest and empirical support. Various studies have reported effects of mindfulness training in adolescents with ADHD.SummaryThis review will summarize the rationale behind the use of mindfulness training in adolescents with ADHD. Moreover, this review will also explain outcomes from various studies recommending use of mindfulness training as a treatment of ADHD in adolescents.
