Assessing and Enhancing Clinical Competence: The 2019 Hower Award Lecture.

Medical education can be considered a linear process, beginning with four years of an undergraduate education followed by four years of medical school and three to seven or more years of post-graduate training. This linear process, a colleague once noted, makes neurologists superb educators because we think linearly. As an example, a child has a seizure, and we logically proceed to a routine awake and asleep electroencephalogram (EEG). If the EEG is normal, we observe the child, whereas if the EEG is abnormal, we may consider anticonvulsant therapy, depending upon the nature of the EEG findings and the clinical characteristics of the child and the seizure.
