We analyzed structural and functional features of the main mitochondrial Ca2+-transporting systems, mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter complex (MCUC) and Ca2+-dependent cyclosporin A-sensitive mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPT pore), in rats with hyperthyroid state. It was found that, the rate of Ca2+ accumulation by rat liver mitochondria in this pathology increases by 1.3 times, which can be associated with higher level of the channel-forming subunit of the uniporter MCU and lower content of dominant-negative subunit of this complex MCUb. At the same time, the level of the regulatory subunit MICU1 remained unchan...

In cats, hyperthyroidism can be treated in 4 ways: medical management with methimazole or carbimazole, nutritional management (low-iodine diet), surgical thyroidectomy, and radioactive iodine (131I). Each form of treatment has advantages and disadvantages that should be considered when formulating a treatment plan for the individual hyperthyroid cat. Medical and nutritional managements are considered “reversible” or palliative treatments, whereas surgical thyroidectomy and 131I are “permanent” or curative treatments. The author discusses how each treatment modality could be the optimal choice for a ...

CONCLUSION: Searching in the English literature for previous studies, we identified only 30 cases worldwide to form our database. A demographic as well as clinical, laboratory, and histopathological analysis was performed. In most cases, the recovery of biochemical euthyroidism through the use of ATDs induced the resolution of pancytopenia (at laboratory and histological levels). Our review provides clinical, laboratory, and histopathological features of Graves's hyperthyroidism-related pancytopenia with a view to improving the knowledge of this rare hematological complication and assisting in the decision-making process r...

Authors: Czarnywojtek A, Zgorzalewicz-Stachowiak M, Czarnocka B, Sawicka-Gutaj N, Gut P, Krela-Kazmierczak I, Ruchala M Abstract Lithium carbonate, a drug known for more than 100 years, has been successfully used as a psychiatric medication. Currently, it is a commonly used drug to treat patients with unipolar and bipolar depression, and for the prophylaxis of bipolar disorders and acute mania. Lithium salts may cause the development of goiter, hypothyroidism, or rarely hyperthyroidism. The present review examined the current state of knowledge on the effect of lithium carbonate on the thyroid gland. The Pubmed dat...

CA, Barrón-Vivanco BS Abstract Exposure to organophosphate pesticides (OP) has been associated with the inhibition of cholinesterase enzymatic activity, such as butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). Changes in BuChE activity have been associated with obesity, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and metabolic syndrome. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of pesticides on both BuChE and lipid parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate lipid parameters in urban sprayers and their association with BuChE activity. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in workers exposed to pesticides. The pestici...

ConclusionsThe levels of TRAb in subjects with a recent-onset, untreated GO are directly correlated with the clinical activity of the disease, confirming a possible role of these antibodies in the pathogenesis of  GO.

Conclusions: Thyroid function within the reference range was associated with heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac structure, and function. Increasing thyroid function (lower TSH, higher FT4, or higher FT3) was associated with a higher heart rate, a lower diastolic blood pressure, and larger LV volumes. LV wall thickness and ejection fraction had a U-shaped association with thyroid hormones.Eur Thyroid J

The objective of this study was to share our experience with patients presenting with discrepant TFTs outlining the main pitfalls in the differential diagnosis. Methods: medical records of 100 subjects with discrepant TFTs referred to Thyroid Endocrine Centers at the University of Milan were analyzed, retrospectively. Patients were studied by dynamic testing (TRH test, T3-suppression test, or a short course of long-acting somatostatin analog, when appropriate), THRB sequencing, and pituitary imaging. Results: 88 patients were correctly diagnosed as RTHβ with (n = 59; 16 men, 43 women) or without THRB variants (n = 6; 2 ...

CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the standing that TSH, fT3, and fT4 levels are important variables to determine the association of thyroid function with MetS. PMID: 32643339 [PubMed - in process]
