Decomposing Heterogeneity in Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Neurosubtyping

Efforts to decompose heterogeneity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by identifying more homogeneous subgroups within ASD have a long history. Categorical diagnoses of ASD in previous editions of the DSM-III and DSM-IV, such as pervasive developmental disorders and Asperger ’s disorder, were among the earliest attempts to capture behavioral heterogeneity in ASD. However, these efforts to demonstrate quantifiable differences between the categorical groups were not particularly successful, which led to the shift to a single diagnosis of ASD in the DSM-5.
