Role of anesthesia nurses in the treatment and management of patients with COVID-19

As the backbone for the treatment of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), nurses have been actively playing key roles in cabin hospitals, isolation wards, and intensive care units (ICUs) for critical cases. Anesthesia nurses have their own professional specialties, such as airway management, the use and maintenance of life support equipment, including ventilators, and the use of high-flow oxygen equipment. With rich experience in emergency responses and nursing, anesthesia nurses, along with emergency nurses and critical care nurses, play important roles during the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak is up to date existed, therefore this report is considered as interim guidelines for airway management of the suspected/confirmed patients. We report preliminary experience with the efficacy of an enclosure with augmented airflow to decrease the risk of exposure to aerosolized pathogens during airway management including endotracheal intubation. In December 2019, a novel, ongoing outbreak of pneumonia was reported in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. A novel coronavirus was found to be responsible for the outbreak in patients from Wuhan and subsequently was named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
