Atrial dysfunction in Fontan patients: Does it add another piece to the puzzle?

The long-term course of patients with a Fontan circulation is characterized by the risk of early progressive clinical deterioration and premature death. Multiple factors are involved in the development of a ‘failing’ Fontan circulation. Single ventricle (SV) dysfunction, narrowed pulmonary arteries, elevated pulmonary vascular resistance, aortopulmonary and venovenous collaterals, atrioventricular valve regurgitation, ventricular outflow tract obstructions and systemic venous thrombosis might have deleterious effects on the fragile Fontan circulation.
