Firearm laws and illegal firearm flow between US states

BACKGROUND Considerable variation in firearm legislation exists. Prior studies show an association between stronger state laws and fewer firearm deaths. We hypothesized that firearms would flow from states with weaker laws to states with stronger laws based on proximity and population. METHODS Crime gun trace data from 2015 to 2017 was accessed from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and compared with the count and composition of firearm legislation in 2015 among the contiguous 48 states. Additional independent variables included population, median household income, distance, and presence or absence of a shared border. We used Exponential Random Graph Models to identify predictors of traced firearm transfers between origin and destination states. RESULTS After controlling for network structure, firearm laws in origin states were associated with fewer traced firearm transfers (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83–0.93; p

AbstractAlcohol fermentation is a key process in wine, beer, alcoholic beverage production, bioethanol production by means of carbohydrate sources, and food industry byproducts. There are three key points in these kinds of processes determining their efficiency; enzymatic cellulose lysis into simple sugar molecules, alcohol fermentation rate, and ethanol tolerance of yeast cells. The first process is usually carried out by either the use of pure cellulolytic enzymes, which is a high cost procedure, or by the production of these enzymes from cellulolytic bacteria and filamentous fungi. Lately,Saccharomyces cerevisiae and se...

AbstractRecent advancements in the research on endophytes isolated from plants and crops have greatly broadened its application in various fields. Endophytic bacteria and endophytic fungi are known to promote the growth of various plants. Besides, the secondary metabolites such as alcohol and xylitol secreted by the endophytic yeast also help their hosts to resist microbial invasion. This makes them a potential substitute for chemical-based control methods. Moreover, the plant hosts can also provide nutrients for the growth of endophytic yeasts. To achieve the symbiotic relationship, yeasts must colonize most parts of the ...

AbstractIntoxicated persons showing challenging behavior (IPCBs) under influence of alcohol and/or drugs frequently have trouble finding appropriate acute care. Often IPCBs are stigmatized being unwilling or unable to accept help. Separated physical and mental healthcare systems hamper integrated acute care for IPCBs. This pilot aimed to substantiate the physical, psychiatric, and social health needs of IPCBs visiting the emergency room (ER) during a 3-month period. All ER visits were screened. After triage by the ER physician, indicated IPCBs were additionally assessed by the consultation –liaison–psychiatry p...

The U.S. has recorded more than 3.1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, with numbers surging to new highs in some states that have rolled back lockdown restrictions. In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster signed an executive order prohibiting the sale of alcohol after 11 p.m. In Tennessee's Shelby County, restaurants require customers to leave their contact information before being seated, so owners are able to contact them if someone there tests positive for the virus. Michael George reports from New York, which has just sent hard-hit Florida enough Remdesivir to treat 280 patients.
