Awfulizing: Some Conceptual and Therapeutic Considerations

AbstractIn this paper, I will consider the concept of awfulizing, typically seen in REBT theory as a secondary irrational belief that is derived from the primary irrational belief, known as demandingness, or more colloquially as musturbation. I will look at how the concept of awfulizing has been defined in REBT and some of the objections to its use in therapy and beyond. If REBT therapists are going to target awfulizing beliefs for change then this needs to be done carefully and within the context of a good working alliance. I will outline some important considerations that therapists need to be aware of when working with their clients ’ awfulizing beliefs.
