Interventional cardiology in the neonate: Still a macgyver procedure?

The first interventional procedure in neonates was described in 1966 by W.J. Rashkind [1]. He reported a trans-catheter balloon atrio-septostomy in a new-born with transposition of the great arteries {S,D,D}. Although the first description of an interventional procedure was in a neonate with a congenital heart disease, the ulterior development of interventional cardiology in this field has been rather limited compared to that in adults with coronary or structural heart diseases. Since the first description of coronary balloon angioplasty by Gruntzig in 1977, millions of PCI have been performed around the world.
