CONCLUSIONS: Extracting from the group of genes related to coronary atherosclerosis and cardiac failure: MMP-9, TGF-β1 and TIMP-1 differentiating patients with heart failure on the basis of myocardial ischemia in varying degrees of severity from healthy people may indicate their significant contribution to disease development. Also increased expression of the metalloproteinase gene 9 (MMP-9) with a simultaneous decrease in the expression of its tissue inhibitor 1 (TIMP-1) in the studied group of patients with ischemic heart failure differing in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) makes them the markers of progre...

Authors: Stepien K, Furczynska P, Zalewska M, Nowak K, Wlodarczyk A, Owsianka I, Skorek P, Zalewski J, Nessler J Abstract BACKGROUND: Recently heart failure (HF) has been found to be a new dementia risk factor, nevertheless their relations in patients following HF decompensation remain unknown. We sought to investigate whether a screening diagnosis for dementia (SDD) in this high-risk population may predict unfavorable long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: 142 patients following HF decompensation requiring hospitalization were enrolled. Within a median time of 55 months all patients were screened for dementia w...

Authors: Ueno H, Imamura T, Kinugawa K Abstract Patients with advanced heart failure often accompany severe function mitral regurgitation refractory to optimal medical therapy. Degenerative mitral regurgitation also develops due to various degeneration of mitral valve. Surgical intervention to the mitral valve might be effective in some cases, but it is challenging for the high-risk cases. Recently, percutaneous edge-to-edge mitral valve repair using the MitraClip system, which enables us to approach the mitral valve at relatively low risk, has developed. Two major prospective randomized control trials have been co...

Conclusions/interpretationWe found a significant and consistent association between pregnancy loss and later type 2 diabetes that increased with increasing number of losses. Thus, pregnancy loss and recurrent pregnancy loss are significant risk factors for later type 2 diabetes. Future studies should explore whether this association is due to common background factors or whether prediabetic metabolic conditions are responsible for this association.Graphical abstract

(Osaka University) Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has shown promising results in the treatment of conditions ranging from liver cirrhosis to retinal damage, but results can be variable. Using a mouse heart failure model, researchers led by Osaka University found that levels of a fat cell-derived hormone called adiponectin in the host significantly affect the efficacy of MSC therapy. Administration of a drug that increases adiponectin in combination with MSCs is therefore likely to significantly improve the clinical outcome.

Authors: Ryu B, Sato S, Mochizuki T, Inoue T, Okada Y, Niimi Y Abstract Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome is a newly described entity characterized by autosomal dominantly inherited multifocal capillary malformations caused by RASA1 mutations (CM-AVM1) or EPHB4 mutations (CM-AVM2). Concurrent high-flow vascular anomalies in the brain are often present in the form of intracranial AVM or arteriovenous fistula (AVF). These high-flow lesions are often identified at or soon after birth because of the characteristic unique capillary malformations or a systemic disorder due to a high-flow...

ConclusionsThe present study found no evidence to support an association between the use of pregabalin and increased risk of worsening heart failure, compared with gabapentin and duloxetine.

ConclusionSurgical management is indicated in high-risk patients, but the optimal management for a nonmalignant, shared origin for all three coronary arteries has not been explored in detail.
