In a nice effort using a nationwide inpatient database, the authors showed that administration of alvimopan perioperatively in patients undergoing radical cystectomy and urinary diversion resulted in decrease in length of hospital stay (LOS), by 1 day on average, and a significant decrease in the odds of prolonged hospital stay and rate of readmission due to postoperative ileus (POI). They also demonstrated a considerable reduction in overall cost of hospitalization after adjusting for hospital and patient characteristics ( ∼$2700).
