Authors: van Bruggen FH, Nijhuis GBJ, Zuidema SU, Luijendijk HJ Abstract BACKGROUND: Previous reviews of PCSK9 inhibitor trials are limited by a focus on composite cardiovascular outcomes. ClinicalTrials.gov provides trial results for individual clinical outcomes. Aim of this systematic review was to assess the effect of PCSK9 inhibitors on the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke/TIA, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, neurocognitive events, all-cause serious adverse events (SAE) and all-cause deaths as registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. METHODS: PubMed, regulatory reports, ClinicalTrials.gov, and company websi...

qvist P Abstract OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) related to atherosclerosis, preceded by arterial stiffness. We aimed to examine common carotid artery (CCA) biomechanical properties using ultrasound to calculate β stiffness index (indicating arterial stiffness) and, a more recently developed technique, two-dimensional (2D) speckle tracking strain (indicating arterial motion and deformation, strain) to 1) compare with age- and sex-matched controls and to 2) analyze relationships between strain and stiffness with disease characteristics ...

In this study, we have evaluated the detailed therapeutic effect of statin plus ezetimibe intensive therapy. METHOD: For STEMI patients with non-IRA disease undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), 183 control STEMI patients without non-IRA disease undergoing primary PCI, and 200 STEMI patients with non-IRA disease undergoing primary PCI were introduced into this study. 200 STEMI patients with non-IRA disease undergoing primary PCI were divided into Normal group, Intensive group, Normal &Combined group, and Intensive &Combined group. The baseline information for each participant was recorde...

Abstract Apoptosis, necrosis and autophagy-dependent cell death are the three major types of cell death. Traditionally, necrosis is thought as a passive and unregulated form of cell death. However, certain necrosis can also occur in a highly regulated manner, referring to regulated necrosis. Depending on the signaling pathways, regulated necrosis can be further classified as necroptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, parthanatos and CypD-mediated necrosis. Numerous studies have reported that regulated necrosis contributes to the progression of multiple injury-relevant diseases. For example, necroptosis contributes to t...

AbstractObjectiveLinagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, recently demonstrated cardiovascular (CV) safety versus placebo in Asians with advanced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the CARMELINA® trial. We assessed its CV safety compared with the sulfonylurea glimepiride in Asians with relatively early T2DM in the CAROLINA® trial.MethodsBased on prespecified and post hoc subgroup analyses of the multinational CAROLINA® trial in which adults with relatively early T2DM and elevated CV risk were randomized to linagliptin or glimepiride added to usual care, we analyzed data for participants from Asian count...

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and HIV are independently associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the factors associated with NAFLD in persons living with HIV (PWH) and whether CVD is more frequent in PWH with NAFLD are currently unknown. Methods: From the Partners HealthCare Research Patient Data Registry, we identified PWH with and without NAFLD between 2010 and 2017. NAFLD was defined using validated histological or radiographic criteria. CVD was defined by an ICD-9 diagnosis of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, peripheral vascular diseas...

When COVID-19 lockdowns were first announced in March, doctors also urged patients to postpone all but the most necessary procedures and appointments to save space in hospitals. Many elective surgeries were pushed off, and routine care was mostly moved online. From the beginning, doctors feared these difficult but necessary precautions would have an unintended consequence: Dissuading from people who actually did need immediate care from getting it. Now, new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirm that concern. ( function() { var func = function() { var iframe = document.ge...

Sara Wittner had seemingly gotten her life back under control. After a December relapse in her battle with drug addiction, the 32-year-old completed a 30-day detox program and started taking a monthly injection to block her cravings for opioids. She was engaged to be married, working for a local health advocacy group in Colorado, and counseling others about drug addiction. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The virus knocked down all the supports she had carefully built around her: no more in-person Narcotics Anonymous meetings, no talks over coffee with trusted friends or her addiction recovery sponsor. As the virus stressed...

CONCLUSION: ICHRON predicted ChrD diagnosis at 3-years among an external, geographically distant validation cohort. These findings show the value of ICHRON for primary care patients in distinct locales. Additionally, electronic calculation of ICHRON empowers the clinical use of this tool to identify and differentially manage and treat high-risk patients.
