Delirium in Geriatric Patients Undergoing Emergency General Surgery: A Call to Action

We would like to thank the editor for the opportunity to reply to the thoughtful comments raised by Cheng and colleagues. It is evident that delirium remains a significant burden on the health care system and is associated with adverse postoperative outcomes, including delayed recovery,1 functional decline, and increased risk of institutionalization. The pathogenesis of delirium, especially when occurring within a background of biologic vulnerability, is complex and multifactorial, and shares multiple mechanistic pathways with frailty.
