Protein C deficiency presenting as an acute infero-posterior ST elevation myocardial infarction in a young man; A case report and focused literature review
Protein C (PC) is a key component in the vitamin-K dependent coagulation pathway, which requires thrombin on the surface of endothelial cells to form activated PC. The latter exerts its anticoagulant effect by inhibiting both factors VIIIa and Va, thereby downregulating the coagulation pathways. A deficiency in plasma PC, therefore, results in a prothrombotic state. Heterozygous PC deficiency is estimated to occur in 0.02 –0.05% of the general population. It is discovered in 2–5% of incident and up to 10% of recurrent venous thromboembolic events [1].
