We appreciate the thorough feedback of Du et al1 on our study of the safety and efficacy of vitamin C solution for the relief of adverse symptoms caused by Lugol chromoendoscopy,2 and we will discuss the issues raised by the authors. Although some patients with esophageal dysplasia and carcinoma (EDC) experience symptoms, most EDC patients d o not. A vitamin C solution spray relieved the mucosal irritation caused by Lugol’s iodine staining rather than alleviating symptoms caused by EDC. Furthermore, patients with EDC often undergo Lugol chromoendoscopy during the diagnostic phase.
