Sudden cardiac death, which accounts for approximately half of cardiovascular disease mortality,1 has declined with use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy.2 Further, survival advantage associated with an ICD in older adults has also increased its utilization,3,4 particularly for primary prevention using ICD therapy for those with systolic ventricular dysfunction.5,6 For example, more than half of the total 175,000 ICD placements were performed on older adults aged > 70 years in the United States.
