This study aims to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of colchicine in non-severe hospitalized COVID-19 patients.Trial designProspective, randomized (1:1 ratio), double blind study with parallel group design.ParticipantsHospitalized patients with positive nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19 infection (RT -PCR) and lung Computed tomography scan involvement compatible with COVID-19 pneumonia. The patients are not severely hypoxic, do not need intubation or invasive oxygenation.Exclusion criteria: known hypersensitivity to colchicine; known hepatic failure; estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)450 msec.Participants will ...

Post-lung transplantation (post-LTx) progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.1 Comorbidities and cotreatments, and post-LTx medical complications, including acute kidney injury (AKI), are associated with an increased risk for subsequent CKD development.2 However, among the several risk factors for post-LTx CKD development, pre-transplant renal function plays a key role.3

Studies have shown that highly selected patients undergoing combined heart-kidney (HK) and heart-liver transplants (HLv) have short- and long-term outcomes comparable to those observed in primary heart transplantation (HT). Adults patients with stage D heart failure that underwent combined HK, HLv and heart-lung (HL) were identified in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) registry between 1991 and 2016, with follow-up through March 2018. We conducted inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) survival analysis of long-term survival stratified by type of combined organ transplant, accounting for donor, recipie...

While most people are familiar with the hallmark symptoms of COVID-19 by now—cough, fever, muscle aches, headaches and difficulty breathing—a new crop of medical conditions are emerging from the more than 4 million confirmed cases of the disease around the world. These include skin rashes, diarrhea, kidney abnormalities and potentially life-threatening blood clots. It’s not unusual for viruses to directly infect and affect different tissues and organs in the body, but it is a bit unusual for a primarily respiratory virus like SARS-CoV-2, which is responsible for COVID-19, to have such a wide-ranging reach...

This study provides direct evidence for the contribution of gut microbiota to the cognitive decline during normal aging and suggests that restoring microbiota homeostasis in the elderly may improve cognitive function. On Nutraceutical Senolytics https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/05/on-nutraceutical-senolytics/ Nutraceuticals are compounds derived from foods, usually plants. In principle one can find useful therapies in the natural world, taking the approach of identifying interesting molecules and refining them to a greater potency than naturally occurs in order to produce a usefully large therape...

Conclusion: Although 211At-Psyche-B showed low serum stability in vitro, tumor uptake was confirmed and accumulation increased over time in vivo. Thus, this study suggested that our pre-targeting strategy of low-immunogenic CEA scFv-Cupid and 211At labeled Psyche might work for advanced cancer treatment. Organ transplantation is undergoing profound changes. Contraindications for donation have been revised in order to better meet the organ demand. The use of lower-quality organs and organs with greater preoperative damage, including those from donation after cardiac death (DCD), has become an established routine but increases the risk of graft malfunction. This risk is further aggravated by ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI) in the process of transplantation. These circumstances demand a preservation technology that ameliorates IRI and allows for assessment of viability and function prior to transplantation. Oxygenated h...

(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) France and the United States have experienced a tremendous reduction in the number of organ donations and solid organ (kidney, liver, heart, and lung) transplant procedures since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. By early April, transplant centers in both countries were conducting far fewer deceased donor transplants compared to just one month earlier, with the number of procedures dropping by 91% in France and 50% in the United States.

We describe our initial experience with a combined system for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal-continuous extrarenal replacement in a lung transplant patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure, barotrauma and associated acute renal failure. The most important technical aspects, the effectiveness of the system for the elimination of carbon dioxide and a review of the literature are described.
