Mechanical Thrombectomy in Nonagenarians: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis
Improvement in medical care and socio-economic growth has led to increased average life expectancy worldwide, surpassing 90 years in some countries. According to U.S. census bureau data, 1.7% of the U.S. population was over age 85 in 2010, representing a 30% increase from 2000. With increasing age, the incidence and prevalence of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is also higher. In general, older patients also tend to have more severe strokes, smaller penumbra, and relatively faster conversion to ischemic core due to decreased cerebrovascular reserve.
