Dose prediction using a deep neural network for accelerated planning of rectal cancer radiotherapy

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common in women, [1]. Radiation therapy is an indispensable part of adjuvant therapy for rectal cancer, because it improves local control, overall survival, and the opportunity for good quality of life [2]. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is the most commonly used technique [3,4], with the advantages of high target dose coverage and organs-at-risk (OAR) dose sparing because IMRT has strong dose modulation ability with multiple segments at fixed gantry angles by inverse optimization process.
