Evolving trends in strabismus following retinal surgery: is there still a role for botulinum toxin?

Conclusions: Botulinum toxin is a useful treatment modality, particularly when surgical options are limited. It can restore binocularity in patients with preexisting fusion potential. Ocular cosmesis can be achieved but requires ongoing injections. Barriers to fusion restoration include multiple retinal surgeries, persistent macula pathology and central-peripheral retinal rivalry. This highlights the need for rigorous baseline macula assessment to allow a tailored approach when considering botulinum toxin therapy for strabismus.
