Commentary on the article Risk scoring for time to end-stage knee osteoarthritis: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

Estimates are that 45% of adult Americans are at risk of developing knee osteoarthritis (KOA) during their lifetime1,2. A chronic disease with no cure, KOA progresses often slowly over the course of many years. Non-surgical treatment options mainly address symptoms, and slow disease progression. End-stage KOA is associated with significant functional limitations and pain, and the course of the disease varies widely across patients3 –6. Defining measurable endpoints along the course of KOA, and being able to predict its progression, are essential to advancing our understanding of KOA and therefore improving medical care for KOA.
