Carbon ion radiotherapy in pancreatic cancer: A review of clinical data

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancer entities with estimated 45.750 deaths in the United States in 2019[1]. Despite decades of research, the overall survival rate at five years is still at 5-10%[2]. The only curative therapy option is tumor resection, but only 20% of all patients present with resectable disease at time of diagnosis[3]. Even after resection the postoperative 5-year overall survival rate remains poor[4] since metachronous metastasis and local recurrence occur commonly.
