Cancer risk after bariatric surgery: does weight loss matter?

As the obesity epidemic worsens, the risk of obesity associated cancers continues to rise(1, 2). The link between obesity and cancer is strong with multiple mechanisms driving tumor growth (1). Despite this, cancer remains an under recognized complication of obesity and is rarely discussed as an important reason for weight loss or bariatric surgery. But, perhaps it should be the main reason patients consider treatment options for obesity.
