Surgical Oncology for the General Surgeon

The practice of general surgery is dynamic and ever-changing. A well-trained general surgeon is able to handle a wide array of surgical problems with excellent outcomes. Even with increasing specialization, a large percentage of cancer operations in the United States are done by general surgeons. This includes largely breast, colon, and skin cancers, as there has been regionalization of liver, pancreas, and esophageal cancer surgery. Of note, there are only about 10% of counties in the United States that have a surgical oncologist.
