Financial Coping Strategies of Mental Health Consumers: Managing Social Benefits.

Financial Coping Strategies of Mental Health Consumers: Managing Social Benefits. Community Ment Health J. 2013 Dec 18; Authors: Caplan MA Abstract Mental health consumers depend on social benefits in the forms of supplemental security income and social security disability insurance for their livelihood. Although these programs pay meager benefits, little research has been undertaken into how this population makes ends meet. Using a qualitative approach, this study asks what are the financial coping strategies of mental health consumers? Seven approaches were identified: subsidies, cost-effective shopping, budgeting, prioritizing, technology, debt management, and saving money. Results illustrate the resourcefulness of mental health consumers in managing meager social benefits and highlight the need to strengthen community mental health efforts with financial capabilities education. Treatment of acute triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear using arthroscopic suture repair has been used as a general treatment method, but it is difficult to obtain perfect results in all cases. We evaluated clinical and radiologic outcomes of the acute TFCC tear with distal radioulnar joint instability using the arthroscopic suture repair with pronator quadratus (PQ) advancement. Altogether, 80 patients (48 male, 32 female; mean ± SD age, 37.3 ± 11.5 years; mean ± SD follow-up, 23.7 ± 11.4 months) were enrolled in the study. Follow-up was at least 12 months (range, 12–38 months). ...

Conclusions Flexor tendon lacerations represent an important economic burden to our health care system, even when compared with other common hand conditions. Specifically, indirect costs, such as missed workdays, are the major contributor toward the total cost these injuries incur on society, accounting for upward of 89% of the total cost. This suggests that we should focus our efforts to improve treatments and rehabilitation protocols which decrease these indirect costs.

CONCLUSIONS: Informal carers of people with intellectual disability and/or ASD experience significant loss of income, leading to increased welfare payments and reduced taxation revenue for governments; these are all projected to increase. Strategic policies supporting informal carers wishing to return to work could improve the financial and psychological impact of having a family member with intellectual disability and/or ASD. I have opined for more than a decade that it's not worth worrying too much about unauthorized access to your personal health and research data because"that horse has already left the barn" (see:On the Privacy of Health Information: The Horse Is Already Out of the Barn). The security of anonymized health data was discussed in a recent blog note in a Q and A with Hank Greely, a Stanford law professor who focuses on the ethics behind new technologies related to neuroscience and genetics (see:Genetic Testing: Who Owns Your Data?). This site is calledBeing Patient. Below is the excerpt from the article:B...

Authors: Nisker J Abstract Dissolution of Canada's single-tiered health system is now before the Supreme Court of British Columbia and will soon be before the Supreme Court of Canada. If our Supreme Court justices are persuaded to dissolve the Canada Health Act, financially advantaged Canadians will be permitted to purchase privileged access to physicians, diagnostic tests, and surgical facilities. This queue jumping will diminish access for the socioeconomically disadvantaged, among whom women are overrepresented, including women living with disabilities, women of Indigenous heritage, and women who have recently i...

It is always pleasant to see new efforts to produce longevity-focused interest sites and publications; Longevity.Technology is a recent example, here publishing an interview with Aubrey de Grey of the SENS Research Foundation that touches on recent developments in the field of rejuvenation research. There have been many such news organization initiatives over the past ten to fifteen years, and all too few of them lasted. Hopefully that will change now that an industry of rejuvenation is forming, beginning with the development of senolytic therapies, and ever greater degrees of funding and attention are directed towards thi...
