New retrotransposon copies may lead to cell transformation and/or tumorigenesis through insertional mutagenesis. Methylation is a major defense mechanism against retrotransposon RNA expression and retrotransposition in differentiated cells, whereas stem cells are relatively hypo‑methylated.
